Indoor playground installation begins long before the first steel frame is raised. Site dimensions, approvals, freight planning, floor preparation, contractor coordination and quality records all affect the opening date. A well-manufactured playground can still be delayed if the venue is not ready or if responsibilities are unclear.

Freeze the right information before production

Equipment should be based on verified site information. Leasing drawings may not show final wall finishes, service positions or construction tolerances. Complete a site survey and coordinate the equipment footprint with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and fire information.

The approved drawing set should identify:

  • Overall equipment dimensions and orientation
  • Finished floor levels and fixing locations
  • Columns, walls, doors and protected circulation routes
  • Sprinklers, ducts, lights, signs and other overhead services
  • Electrical or data connections required by interactive elements
  • Installation access and maintenance clearances

Use a formal approval record. Verbal acceptance of a visual rendering is not enough to release fabrication.

Define responsibilities in writing

Commercial play projects involve the equipment supplier, owner, general contractor, landlord, freight company, installers, local consultants and inspector. Every interface needs an owner.

Create a responsibility matrix covering design approvals, permits, foundations or slab work, unloading, temporary storage, lifting equipment, waste removal, power, work access, installation supervision, inspection and staff training. Clarify who supplies consumables and tools that are not included with equipment.

Prepare the site before delivery

“Nearly ready” is not ready. Equipment packages occupy significant space, and installers lose time when they must work around wet trades, unprotected finishes or incomplete services.

Site readiness checklist

  • The installation area is weather-tight, dry and secure.
  • Floors are complete to the agreed level and strength.
  • Ceiling services are installed or clearly coordinated.
  • Access doors, lifts and routes can accept the largest package.
  • Temporary lighting and power are available.
  • A clean, dry storage area is allocated.
  • Other trades will not work unsafely above or inside the installation zone.
  • Permits, inductions and working-hour approvals are arranged.

Photograph the area before delivery and record any deviations from the approved drawings.

Plan freight, customs and unloading

International projects need realistic time for production, packing, export documentation, freight, customs clearance and local delivery. Avoid scheduling installers to arrive on the same day as an estimated container delivery. Build contingency for port congestion, inspections and local transport restrictions.

Before unloading, confirm package counts against the packing list. Inspect for visible damage and record it immediately with photographs. Store components by installation sequence rather than scattering similar items across the venue.

Use drawings and labels to control assembly

Large indoor playgrounds contain many similar posts, decks, nets, panels and padded covers. A clear labeling system reduces mistakes. Installation drawings should connect package labels to grid positions and assembly steps.

Start with control lines and primary structural frames. Check dimensions, plumb and level before adding secondary components. Small early errors can compound across a large structure and cause misalignment at slides, bridges or enclosure panels.

Sequence the installation logically

The exact sequence depends on the design, but a typical process may include:

  1. Verify the site, floor levels and equipment grid.
  2. Set out base locations and primary structural frames.
  3. Install platforms, bracing and major access elements.
  4. Fit slides, tunnels, bridges and larger attractions.
  5. Install play events, panels and internal barriers.
  6. Complete nets, padding, closures and floor finishes.
  7. Check fasteners, gaps, routes, labels and maintenance access.
  8. Clean the structure and prepare for formal inspection.

Do not cover critical fixings before required checks are completed. Maintain progress photographs and issue records throughout the work.

Protect finished work

Installed equipment can be damaged by dust, paint, sharp tools or other contractors. Control access and define who may enter the structure. Keep packaging and loose hardware away from guest areas. Do not allow the public into a partially completed playground.

Soft padding and vinyl surfaces should be installed and cleaned using manufacturer-approved methods. Replace damaged covers rather than hiding defects with improvised repairs.

Complete quality checks before inspection

The installation team should perform its own documented checks before inviting an independent inspector. Review the approved drawings, component list and applicable standard requirements. Confirm that barriers, nets, fasteners, padding, entrances, exits and play events match the intended configuration.

Any site modification should be recorded and approved by a competent party. Never alter a structural or safety-critical component simply to make it fit.

Arrange independent inspection and close findings

Inspection requirements vary by country, authority, insurer and project type. Confirm the required inspector and documentation early enough to book the visit. Provide drawings, manuals, material information and installation records as requested.

Treat findings as a controlled closeout list. Record the correction, responsible person, completion date and evidence. Opening should occur only after required approvals and critical items are closed.

Hand over more than a finished structure

The operator needs the information required to manage the asset. A practical handover package may include:

  • Approved drawings and final configuration records
  • Operating and maintenance manuals
  • Inspection and closeout documents
  • Recommended spare and wear parts
  • Cleaning guidance and approved materials
  • Warranty contacts and issue-reporting procedure
  • Staff training records and opening-check templates

Prepare for opening day

Run a soft-opening exercise with staff before admitting a full public session. Test check-in, guest briefing, capacity controls, lost-child response, first aid, cleaning, defect isolation and closing procedures. Observe real movement through entrances, toddler zones, stairs, slides and seating.

Use the exercise to adjust staffing and signage, not to modify equipment without approval. Keep initial attendance controlled so the team can learn the venue.
